SANYO Digital Radios – Coming in JUNE
I mentioned some months ago that Sanyo will enter the Digital Radio (DAB+) market in Australia early this year. Turns out the radio’s are now on the high seas heading our way.
Expect to see them in stores like Big W and Dick Smith Powerhouse TARGET in June.

Prices range from RRP $129 up to $249 for the Micro System, however with recent price drops across DAB, I’d expect to see the clock radio and portable radio models in major retaillers at the $99 mark very soon.
UPDATE: The Micro System will hit the shelves at around $179, the Clock Radio $99 and the Portable at $89 – BIG W and Target – and those prices could be lower depending on those retaillers!

Mini review of RMD85:
Sanyo RMD85 DAB+ Digital Clock Radio
Good:
- Big, clear display with plenty of info
- Sensitive DAB+ tuner
- RDS Support on FM
- Sets the time automatically!
- Reasonably priced
Not so good:
- No headphone socket
- AC operation only
- Slightly tinny sound
- Looks/feels a little cheap
Got my hands on a Sanyo RMD85 DAB+ digital clock radio yesterday. I won it as a prize, but if you were to buy it yourself they're around RRP$99 or so. That said, I'd expect it to come down in price a bit over the next couple of months.
My initial thoughts is that the screen is nice and legible, the info button gives some great detail (including bitrate, codec, channel number and frequency … really geeky stuff that most DAB+ radios shield from the end user), it does RDS on FM even though it doesn't mention anything about it in the instructions, reception is good (I get all bars showing in areas where I only get 4-5 bars with a Pure One Mini) and the autodimming display is a nice touch.
There are a few negatives, mainly stuff like a lack of a 3.5mm jack, slightly tinny sound, AC only, and the styling itself is a little plain and it looks a little cheap. Some people may also find a 5 minute snooze a little weird, as 9 minutes is the norm.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. If you're after a basic clock radio that has a sensitive DAB+ tuner and a nice display for not a lot of money, the Sanyo is worth a look.
