LG Impress with their ‘new’ 3D offering

April 15, 2011 Hardware, Opinion, TV comments

Smart TV is the buzz word for 2011 in TV’s – however LG yesterday hit the ball out of the park with their 2011 product launch.  You see it wasn’t JUST about ‘Smart TV’, it wasn’t a few simple innovations, they had some real concepts of worth on show.

When the announcements began and the death by powerpoint was started, it was all doom and gloom – telling us how bad 3D is (or now was), but as a user of an LG TV which is 3D I found this quite off putting.  Fortunately, I won my TV so don’t have price remorse, but people in the last year have shelled out thousands of dollars for these screens and now we’re being told they realise how bad it was?

Kogan have this morning launched an android based set top box to connect your Big Screen TV to the Internet.

NP204_combo_

One of the big challenges facing the range of ever connected devices in our home is delivering the Internet to those devices.

I’ve spoken in podcast after podcast about the different ways you can distribute the internet around your home, Wifi, Ethernet, and Powerline.

Despite the huge range of device options, the retail level distribution is an ongoing problem.  Today, FOXTEL and NETCOMM announced the provision of NETCOMM Powerline based adaptors to push the Internet to your Foxtel box. … Continue Reading

Samsung TV's NRL GAME ANALYSER - from BIGPOND

Watching NRL on your Big Screen TV is the goal for any die hard footy fan. However, that goes to a whole new level today, with the launch of the BigPond Sport GAME ALANYSER on Samsung TV’s

I saw this last night demoed on a TV and it blew me away.

If you have a 2010 model Samsung TV, you can access this now. Older model Samsung TV’s with “Internet@TV” options should get access in the future, however rolling it out to those TV’s might not come until next year I’m guessing.

All you do is add the App to your TV through the app’s menu, and once installed its as easy as pressing a button, choosing a game, and getting into analyzing the game.

Good Riddance HDTV

September 17, 2010 For Subscribers, Opinion, TV comments
digital tv switchover adigitalife

I know, it sounds crazy, but I could care less than Channel 9 and 7 are abandoning their main channel’s HD broadcasts, in favor of a third channel.

Following in the footsteps of Network Ten, which removed its TENHD service to introduce ONEHD, and the recent introduction of ABC NEWS 24 in HD replacing ABC 1 HD, Nine and Seven announced their new ‘third’ channels would be broadcast in HD.

FOXTEL brings the app to your desktop

August 25, 2010 Reviews, TV comments
FOXTEL Gadget - Browsing EPG

FOXTEL have a fantastic iPhone application which allows you to search the program guide, browse channels, set reminders and – if you are  a foxtel user – even set programs to record remotely even when you are no-where near your Foxtel box!

It’s such a handy thing if you have Foxtel IQ and suddenly remember that show you wanted to watch but forgot to record! With the iPhone app you can ‘hit record’ no matter where you are.

At the same time, Foxtel have a fantastic website version of their Guide, which also – if logged in – allowed you to record programs from any internet connected PC.

Today, FOXTEL announced an extension of that app/site… read on for more information

Seven’s new Channel means another shift in HD programming

August 19, 2010 Opinion, TV comments
7mate

The Seven Network today announced they will launch a ‘third’ channel on Digital TV in late September – Named ’7mate’

According to the press release, republished at Mumbrella, the channel will commence with a broadcast of the AFL Grand Final in HD.

There’s a stack of content on offer – like “New episodes of FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD, PARKS AND RECREATION and LAST COMIC STANDING will lead the primetime comedy schedule. 3O ROCK, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, THAT 70’S SHOW, SCRUBS and CRANK YANKERS round out the laughs.” – however, what I find interesting is the decision once again to remove HD from the ‘main’ channel – just like the ABC has done

Election 2010 – Technology’s Role in the Coverage

August 19, 2010 Opinion, TV comments
nineelection

Leaving aside the standard technology which we often take for granted (TV Cameras, Broadcast Satellite, Radio ISDN technology), this could be a great year for watching the Election – as boring as it might be given the nothingness of the campaign, we are in for a real treat when it comes to the coverage.

At the recent General Elections in the UK, the BBC among others went absolutely tech mad – it was fantastic.  I can recall the use of Holograms by CNN or the BBC (I can’t remember) during the US Elections, but for the BBC in the UK election the key tech was the touch screen interface to a big screen TV, and also a ‘white room’ which was totally interactive.
