Apple – Why the name?

February 21, 2012 Opinion comments

Speaking with Luke Grant today on MTR1377 and he posed the question – “why is Apple called Apple?”.

Frankly, I didn’t know.

A quick Wikipedia check suggests:

According to Steve Jobs, Apple was so named because Jobs was coming back from an apple farm, and he was on a fruitarian diet. He thought the name was “fun, spirited and not intimidating

Not quite as inspiring as we’d hope really huh?

Telstra’s 4G comes to your phone – HTC Velocity

January 24, 2012 Opinion comments
4g2

Telstra’s 4G network has been around for a little while now, but only available as a ‘Dongle’ for your laptop or PC.  Super fast speeds though, so well worth the investment for mobile broadband.

Well today, Telstra took that one step further – launching the first 4G handset in Australia – the HTC Velocity.

This is a great phone, a little bulky and on the heavy side, but stylish and well made as we’ve come to expect from HTC.

It’s what’s inside that sets it apart.  4G.  Wow.  That’s all I can say!

The war is over, long live the king.  Well, Samsung and a few others might be hoping the king is about to be challenged with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 about to go head to head with the iPad 2.

With the legal battles over (for now), Samsung now have the right to sell the device in Australia and it will be ready for you to put under the Christmas Tree this year.

September 14, 2011 Apple, For Subscribers, Opinion comments
Kogan's great deal on the iPad 2

Admiration to Ruslan Kogan, he’s done it again.  Another great PR win for him and his team, today announcing they are now selling brand names at the Kogan online store.  Canon, Nikon, Samsung and Apple – all available at amazing prices for Australian consumers.

We’re talking iPad 2′s starting at $489, compared to RRP of $579, and a cheap JB price of $554.

It all seems fantastic.  So is it?

Simply put, yes – will it last – let’s see

Something very different for Digital Radio – Tangent ’2 Go’

August 25, 2011 Opinion comments
Tangent Dab 2go - Range

With Digital Radio sets numbering many more than the handful we knew only a few years ago it is proving difficult for manufacturers to set themselves apart from the rest on the store shelf.

Tangent is yet another new name in audio for Australians, and it comes with something we are seeing more and more of – Danish design and quality sound.

There are various models available, one that took my eye this week is the DAB 2go.

Looks like many more radios on the market, small form factor, single speaker, small screen and a handle on top.. so what makes this one a bit different?

Sennheiser X320

Last night I got a look at some hot new gear for gamers from renowned sound experts Sennheiser.  The X 320 and X 2 are XBOX headsets, designed for use with XBOX LIVE.

The top in the range, the X 320 features Sennheiser stereo sound, a noise cancelling microphone to make sure it’s your voice your competitors are hearing and not all the sound in your games room, a dual volume control allowing you to adjust the game audio or voice of competitors, bass boost and a fantastically simple mute option – activated by simply flicking your microphone up to the headset.

Canon cuts the RRP on 95 products!

August 6, 2011 Opinion comments
Canon-EOS-550D_1

With product supply returning to the levels seen prior to the Japanese earthquake, Canon has announced some radical price cuts on its Digital Imaging products in Australia.

Add the strength of the Aussie dollar into the mix and it’s really a no brainer that this had to happen.  The question is, will everyone else follow?

You can expect up to $500 to be slashed from the price of the Canon EOS 550D down now to $1449 while something like the Powershot SX130 is down $100 to $229.
