It’s moments like these…. we should think Security!

Tonight, twitter experienced a little drama, and a LOT of people freaked out – and rightly so.

How could it be that such a simple coding exploit could cause such a drama!

In the end, Twitter did well to shut it down, and it appears over – for now.

However, what could come are more similar attempts, so we need to be wary of that. … Continue Reading

Twitter’s simple code violation… Going viral

September 21, 2010 Opinion comments

Tonight, late at night ad Australians head off to bed, Twitter is facing an annoying problem, that within hours could be something much worse…

If you use Twitter, and use an app (tweetdeck, seesmic, the twitter apps on iPhone or other devices, you won’t know anything, except that some of the people you follow are posting WEIRD messages.

In a client, those messages look like a whole bunch of code. However, if you use twitter.com, you’ll see a block of colour in a friends status update.

Here’s what’s happening. Because twitter automatically turns any twitter words that start with “http” into a link to THAT “word” twitter itself is creating links to an automatic status update.

The link, essentially, uses JavaScript to automatically submit a status update FROM YOU in YOUR tweet stream, that update is an exact duplicate of the one you clicked on.

No harm, essentially, however, when the thugs of the Internet work out what is going on, they’ll quickly make it spread links to crap and porn sites, and you’ll start seeing “virus software” update messages.

This is not going to be easy to fix but essentially Twitter need to switch off the automated link creation system they have. After that, they’ll need to lock down the javascript that controls status updates.

Bring back raw HTML and tables I say, JavaScript and CSS is over-rated.

Good Riddance HDTV

I know, it sounds crazy, but I could care less than Channel 9 and 7 are abandoning their main channel’s HD broadcasts, in favor of a third channel.

Following in the footsteps of Network Ten, which removed its TENHD service to introduce ONEHD, and the recent introduction of ABC NEWS 24 in HD replacing ABC 1 HD, Nine and Seven announced their new ‘third’ channels would be broadcast in HD.

A good neighbour beats any technology – any day..

What a week.  On Sunday, just before lunch time, my wife gave birth to our second child.  Victoria Lillian Long – She’s beautiful, and just the most wonderful thing for us all.

But, she came a day or so early, in fact, as far as we were concerned, she came about four days early – so, we weren’t quite ready.  The house was a bit of a mess, and generally we could have done with an extra day or so!

In the 3 full days since, I’ve learned fast that a good neighbour beats any technology – any day… Read on for why…

Seven’s new Channel means another shift in HD programming

August 19, 2010 Opinion, TV comments
7mate

The Seven Network today announced they will launch a ‘third’ channel on Digital TV in late September – Named ’7mate’

According to the press release, republished at Mumbrella, the channel will commence with a broadcast of the AFL Grand Final in HD.

There’s a stack of content on offer – like “New episodes of FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD, PARKS AND RECREATION and LAST COMIC STANDING will lead the primetime comedy schedule. 3O ROCK, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, THAT 70’S SHOW, SCRUBS and CRANK YANKERS round out the laughs.” – however, what I find interesting is the decision once again to remove HD from the ‘main’ channel – just like the ABC has done

More programming details are below. … Continue Reading

Election 2010 – Technology’s Role in the Coverage

August 19, 2010 Opinion, TV comments
nineelection

Leaving aside the standard technology which we often take for granted (TV Cameras, Broadcast Satellite, Radio ISDN technology), this could be a great year for watching the Election – as boring as it might be given the nothingness of the campaign, we are in for a real treat when it comes to the coverage.

At the recent General Elections in the UK, the BBC among others went absolutely tech mad – it was fantastic.  I can recall the use of Holograms by CNN or the BBC (I can’t remember) during the US Elections, but for the BBC in the UK election the key tech was the touch screen interface to a big screen TV, and also a ‘white room’ which was totally interactive.

iPhone 4 – “Antennagate” & the “Death Grip” – My experience

August 3, 2010 Opinion comments
phpS22pbkapple-050

I’ve had the iPhone 4 for a few days now, and figured once and for all it was time to test the ‘death grip’ and see what the results might be.

With no bumper on the phone, I set off on my way home. I’m sure you can imagine someone else was driving the car while I conducted all these tests.

As I’ve noted before, I’m with Optus and am aware of two clear blackspots on different routes home.  So, I decided to try a lengthy call heading up the Pacific Highway through blackspot #1 at Lindfield.

iPhone 4 – Which plan, which carrier?

July 27, 2010 iPhone, Opinion comments
route-facetime-20100607

I don’t think it’s as big as buying a house, however choosing an iPhone plan is a big financial decision. You see you are locked in for at least a year, if not two years in most cases.

What if the carrier you choose has a bad network in your area, but you don’t know that because you don’t use them now!

How much data will you use?

For a full list of iPhone plans – view my data page here

These are all difficult questions, continue reading for my personal thoughts on the plans all released today.
